Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I am a new VB programmer and I would like to use Conceptual Charts. How much programming experience is needed?
A : You need to have some programming experience to use Conceptual Charts. Just reading a VB book and doing some practical exercises from the book is not enough. Programmers with a moderate amount of VB experience find Conceptual Charts suprisingly easy. In addition to an understanding of VB, you need to have a basic understand of ActiveX and COM.

Q: I would like to incorporate Conceptual Charts into an application I plan to market. Do you sell licenses for resale?
A : No, we only sell single user (single CPU) licenses. You may not use Conceptual Charts in an application for resale.

Q: I have used some commercial graphics controls, but they didn't plot the stock data in the correct position and the data points don't match up with the x-axis date labels. The weekends are displayed as holes in the data and when I plot other sample periods like weekly, monthly or quarterly data, the data points are in the wrong position. Does Conceptual Charts handle this problem?
A : Yes! All of the data points are in the correct position relative to their date. This is also true for any sample period used, i.e. intraday, daily, weekly, monthly, etc.

Q:  Once I create an array (dataset) in a chart and load it with data, if I create another chart and data plot that uses the same input data, do I have to create another dataset and reload the data?
A:  No, you don't have to reload the data.  Unlike other COM or ActiveX graphics software, Conceptual Charts manages the data so you can use the same dataset between several charts and windows that are running concurrently.  As a result, your application program will execute faster and give the user a better response time.

Q:  How many graphs can be in a window?
A:  More than can be effectively used.  If you use a separate instance of ConceptualCharts, (i.e. use the button in the toolbox multiple times) there is no limit.

Q:  How can I stack two graphs on top of each other with different time periods so I can compare the patterns?
A:  Just create another graph within the same chart, and add a second x-axis for the additional graph.

Q:  How many graphs can I create in a single chart?
A:  A single chart can contain a total of 16 graphs.  In other words, for each separate instance of Conceptual Charts, there can be 16 graphs (subgraphs within a chart).

Q:  Do all of the indicators work in real-time?
A:  All of the indicators that are applicable to real-time applications are designed to also run in real-time.  This is about 98% of the TA Indicators and Line Studies.

Q:  How many Indicators and Line Studies can I place in a chart?
A:  32,000.

Q:  How many y-axes can I use in a chart?
A:  In a single graph you can have up to 7 y-axes: 3 on the left, 3 on the right and one in the center.  If the chart contains 16 stacked graphs, that gives a total of 112 y-axes. This gives the designer a lot of flexibility.

Q:  I have created a complex chart with two graphs and two x-axes.  I want to have two horizontal scrollbars, one for each x-axis.  This is so I can scroll and compare different parts of each graph.  Can I have more than one horizontal scrollbar?
A:  Yes, you can have a scrollbar for each x-axis in the chart.

Q:  Can I change the color of a specific bar in an OHLC bar indicator?  I want to change the bar color to represent when I should buy or sell.
A:  Yes. You can change the color of either a single bar of a range of bars using a "color array".

Q:  Where do I get stock market or futures market price and volume information for my input data?
A:  Conceptual Charts comes with example market data that you can use to develop your software. To obtain additional data and updated market data, there are a number of data services.  You can either buy historical data, or you can download market information over the internet or dial-up telephone lines.  Conceptual Charts includes a list of these data vendors.

Q:  If I use one of these data vendor companies, how do I get the data into my PC?
A:  A piece of software called a "downloader" or "dataserver" is needed.  Many of the data vendor companies provide this software for a small price.  Or, if you don't mind more coding, you can ask your data vendor for their specs and code your own utility.

Q:  Does Investment Technology Labs give investing or trading advice or manage funds for clients?
A:  No.  Although ITL trades the markets, we do not give investment advice or manage funds for clients.  Please do not ask us for market advice or suggestions regarding the application of Technical Analysis.
